Despite what romantic comedies and sitcoms starring savvy singles in the city might want us to think, dating is not fun. It's awkward and scary. Jerry Seinfeld once compared it to a job interview that lasts for hours at the end of which you might end up naked. It's kind of a nightmare when you think about it like that. You can keep hoping you'll just bump into your soulmate one day in a fortuitous and slightly comedic turn of events. Or you can be proactive about your loneliness issues and stop expecting your fairy godmother to zap the right person into your path. Speed dating was invented to help the unwilling skip through the hardest part -- having to ask someone out -- and power through the worst part of the date -- the first six minutes. The next Pre-Dating event for single professionals (women 37 to 47 and men 39 to 49) will take place Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Gizzi's Coffee Shop (2275 S. Federal Highway in Delray Beach). At the end, if there is mutual interest, you will each receive the contact information for the other. If there isn't, no info is exchanged -- see, they even handle the possible rejection for you. The cost is $32, and you must register in advance of the event. Call 877-477-3328, or visit pre-dating.com.
