Thanks to relatively small waves and gentle tides, South Florida has never been known as a surfing destination. But those tranquil conditions do make our coastline ideal for another high-intensity water sport: skim boarding. Like the love child of surfing and skating, skim boarding combines the rush of riding atop the water with wicked tricks and hair-raising stunts. All you need is a knee-high wave to have a good time, says ten-year veteran skim boarder Jason Wilson. And sometimes you dont even need that.
Wilson should know. This December, he and partner Corey Mahoney opened Alley-Oop Skim, a board shop and apparel company in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea (220 E. Commercial Blvd., Ste. B). A sister store to their original Dewey Beach, Delaware, location, Alley-Oop hosts skim camps and clinics, plus free hourlong lessons held each Saturday at 9 a.m. from their tent just north of the Commercial Pier. This week, Alley-Oop will take it up a notch by hosting an all-out skim-boarding trick contest. Featuring pro attendees like Brad Domke, a native of Vero Beach and currently the number-two-ranked skim boarder in the world, this trickcentric throwdown promises to showcase just what you can do with a two-foot wave and a bit of wood. The skimming frenzy will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and culminate in an awards ceremony and freestyle dancing contest held at 7 p.m. back at the shop.
