Southern Living

Beth Henley's Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy Crimes of the Heart is something we can all relate to, despite its occasional absurdity. Although there is certainly a play on generalizations of Southern living, this comedy is a helpful reminder that no family is perfect. Placing an emphasis on learning how to embrace imperfections and help your family in times of need, the plot tracks the ridiculousness of the Magrath sisters during their family reunion in Hazelhurst, Mississippi, when Babe Magrath is arrested for shooting her husband. Definitely not your average family rumble, and the day only gets worse for the Magrath sisters when Lenny Magrath is unable to celebrate her 30th birthday due to her horse being struck by lightning, and to top things off, Meg Magrath leaves the "looney bin" to surprise her family. Despite the tumultuous catfight that ensues, at the end of the day, the sisters realize blood is thicker than molasses. This charming Southern family will warm your heart during a premiere at the Broward Stage Door Theatre starting Friday and running through February 23. The theater is located at 8036 Sample Road in Coral Springs. Tickets cost $38 for regular admission and $16 for students. Call 954-344-7765, or visiting
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m.; Sundays, 7 p.m. Starts: Jan. 17. Continues through Feb. 23, 2014
