Starry Night

Friday is the opening of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF), the region’s ultimate cinephilic event. At 7 p.m., Nice Guy Johnny screens at Broward College’s Bailey Hall (3501 SW Davie Road, Davie). It’s a comedy about — you guessed it — a nice guy named Johnny. Played by Matt Bush of Adventureland, Johnny is a sports-talk jock who promises his fiancée that he’ll abandon that dream job for a higher-paying serious career in New York City. When he arrives for a weekend, sans fiancée, in the Big Apple, his screwy, womanizing if lovable uncle inadvertently steers Johnny toward the seductive Brooke, played by Kerry Bishé of Scrubs. Actor and director Edward Burns (Saving Private Ryan, The Brothers McMullen) will attend the screening. Tickets cost $10 or less.

The premiere is followed by the Starry Night Gala at 9:30 p.m. at the Signature Grand (6900 State Road 84, Fort Lauderdale), less than a five-minute drive from the premiere, with live music by Euphoria, drinks, dancing, a buffet, a silent auction, and more celebrities. Admission costs $75 in advance, $80 at the door, and less for FLIFF members. Call 954-525-3456, or visit
