Now that the 2006 Winter Olympics are over, theres only one Starting Line you need to know about, and it has nothing to do with the rivalry between U.S. speed skaters Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick. Nope. This Starting Line is a bright and shiny pop-punk/emo quartet from Churchville, Pennsylvania -- far away from Olympic action but still more fun than an afternoon of curling.
The Starting Lines tale is a very 21st-century success story. Guitarist Matt Watts met bassist/vocalist Ken Vasoli online, exchanged some MP3s, and soon began making beautiful music together. The duos union couldnt have been more serendipitous if it had been arranged by eHarmony.com. Adding another guitarist and a drummer, the Starting Line zipped out a couple of hit albums full of touchy-feely (but still pogo-worthy) sing-alongs, becoming objects of affection for zillions of teenage girls too young and fresh-faced for the metal scene.
Although the Starting Line recently signed a big-deal contract with Virgin Records, the band is currently promoting Based on a True Story, which it released on the indie label Drive-Thru. For melancholy 20-year-olds in too-tight T-shirts, Based on a True Story is everything they could want. Well, that and having their MySpace profiles featured on the sites home page.
Step up to the Starting Line this Sunday at Revolution (200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). The show starts at 5:30 p.m. with openers Copeland, Gatsbys American Dream, Cartel, and Prizefight. Tickets cost $15. Call 954-727-0950, or visit www.jointherevolution.net.
