Contrary to its name, Fort Lauderdale watering hole the Poorhouse has been rich in its musical offerings and beer selection for more than a decade. No other Himmarshee venue has shown as much dedication to the local music scene as the Poorhouse. From blues to punk to indie and jazz, this native tap house has been a platform for virtually every genre. This Saturday night, vintage surf rock is the topic de jour, with the Poorhouse offering an evening of the area’s best garage-rocking, surf-tinged acts— Pretty Girls, Necrophiles, and Riot Act. Lacking both a lead singer and guitarist, the gothic-tinged Necrophiles are the biggest anomaly on the bill. The veteran of the batch still manages to lure audiences with its dark-hued instrumental jams. Fort Lauderdale’s the Riot Act draws crowds with a jingling style it self-describes as “straight out of a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack.” Pretty Girls is a newer act on the scene that has come out of the gate with gusto; this Boca Raton three-piece is cultivating a large following with its power-pop psychedelic sound and is set to launch its debut EP, Daymares, this summer.
