That Other Local Film Festival
Here are the facts: The Palm Beach International Film Festival is a big, ambitious project undertaken by a group of people who probably make about half of what they're worth, and who want nothing more than to show us all some movies that we've never heard of. They've cobbled together well over 120 such films - shorts, foreign, features, and docs - which over the course of the next 10 days shall play in six different venues around Palm Beach County, mostly near Boca. We've reviewed three of these flicks for our film section, but there's plenty more to do, including the opening night film, Stone of Destiny, with an appearance by director Charles Martin Smith, Thursday at 7p.m. at Sunrise Cinemas in Mizner Park. Stick around after the film for a $50 rooftop party high above Mizner - you'll feel like King of the Botox. On Friday night at 7, the Gala Awards ceremony takes place at the Boca Raton Resort. The black tie affair will honor "respected talents in the motion picture industry," which is biz slang for people who still have jobs. Saturday night, director Joel Zwick, he of highest-grossing-romcom-of-all-time fame (read: My Big Fat Greek Wedding), will host a discussion about how he clawed his way to the top of the film industry (hint: Windex).
Oh, but there's so much more: Seminars, most of which offer instruction on how to make it in the film biz, movies galore, and even a party with reggae luminary Wayne Jobson at Delux Nightclub on Sunday. To find showtimes, addresses, and more, visit pbfilmfest.org. Tickets run from $5, for a cheap one-off ticket, to $1,000 for the tricked-out Platinum Pass with all the bells and whistles. (It gets you access to a shit-ton of parties and galas to which mere moviegoers are not invited. Check it out, if only to meet and greet with James Cromwell, who'll be kicking around to pick up a lifetime achievement award.)
