Begat by folksy American improvisation troubadours Grateful Dead, who subsequently passed the torch to the jazzier Phish and Southern-rock-inspired Widespread Panic, the jam-band concept has been going strong for more than 50 years now. It's morphed to include elements of modern music too, including EDM, with bands such as the Disco Biscuits and Sound Tribe Sector 9 creating a brand of jam-band panache labeled livetronica. Grand Rapids, Michigan, quintet Ultraviolet Hippopotamus runs the gamut of this genre's subdivisions, dishing out deep improv guitar licks at times and funky jams flickering over dance beats at others, and has dabbled with reggae, bluegrass, and space-rock elements. Like lathering up sunscreen on a hot summer day, U.V. Hippopotamus spreads around the improv-rock love to the audience. It's made them a hit on the live music circuit and a huge draw at summer festivals. The group's kitchen sink of grooves will appeal to fans of the Allman Brothers and Bob Marley alike.
