The New JK
These days, being a comic doesn't just mean you tell jokes from the stage. A real comic isn't just a standup; he or she is a mogul of funny. That's exactly the attitude embraced by Jen Kirkman. She takes funny seriously and keeps her skills spread through different media buckets. Yes, she writes and performs standup on the road. She is also on the writing staff of Chelsea Lately, a frequent roundtable contributor, a New York Times bestselling book author of I Can Barley Take Care of Myself, and host of the podcast I Seem Fun. And she does.
Beyond that, Kirkman is a strong representation of what a female comic can be. Her focus is on talking about anything and everything -- from her divorce to her hookups, nothing is off-limits. While the smart people of the world have moved past the "Women aren't funny" adage, unfortunately funny women are still the minority. It's been a while since the Palm Beach Improv featured a successful, big-time female standup comic. Kirkman is slowly taking over every inch of comedy, and Friday, that means she's on the biggest stage for funny in West Palm. If you're not in the audience, we can guarantee you won't be laughing as much as you could be. And isn't that a shame.
See Kirkman live Friday at the Palm Beach Improv, located at 550 S. Rosemary Ave., Suite 250, in West Palm Beach. Showtimes are at 8 and 10:30 p.m. Tickets cost $20 plus fees, and there's a two-drink minimum. Visit palmbeachimprov.com, or call 561-833-1812.
Fri., Aug. 1, 8 & 10:30 p.m., 2014
