The Rhythym’s Gonna Get You

Friedrich Nietzsche loved music — hell, he thought life would be a mistake without it. So if Nietzsche had a Facebook page, we imagine he would be quick to join the fan page of Jigu! Thunder Drums of China, an ensemble of performers from China’s Shanxi province. Because not only is the Shanxi province the birthplace of the drum and gong, but like Nietzsche, the percussionists there are pretty hardcore music enthusiasts. Their percussion skills are passed down from generation to generation, and musicians start practicing at age six. After years of rigorous training, the best performers, when they’re between the ages of 16 to 18, are chosen to become a member of a professional troupe. Through drumming, the Thunder Drums tell wordless tales about war and peace, man and nature, love and delight. Each hypnotic folk melody is uniquely performed with the fusion of music, movements, costumes, and color. Show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets cost $15 to $48. Find Kravis Center for the Performing Arts at 701 Okeechobee Blvd. in West Palm Beach. Call 561-832-7469, or visit
