The Scene Seen Through the Eyes of Artists
The whole indie art scene will be at Rocketown on Saturday, and we know what happens when they all get together: It's a night of self-circulating positivity. There is something about strength in numbers of people wearing Chucks. Even if all 35 local artists who are showing their work are feeling all artisty and gloomy today, that still won't affect the cheeriness of the night. "How can that be?" you may ask. It's gonna feel fantastic over there because it's all for charity -- and because there will be skateboarding. Yeah, a "skate park" will be there. And sports do not come without prizes: A best trick contest will award a winner $100 -- also prizes will be handed out by BC Surf and Sport, among other board shops. Alan "Ollie" Gelfand and Mark Lake will be there to do the autograph I'm-a-pro-skateboarder thing. And you'll be able to check out some art by another pro skateboarder, Lance Mountain. "What's live skateboarding without live art?" you may ask. Well, there will be live art: Jon Hoffman and Mo Brenner will collaborate on artwork that's created before your eyes. JinxRemover will live screen print. Nakota with Steven Kleisath will perform. And when they're not performing, we got DJ-of-everything-indie Andie Sweetswirl to provide the tunes.
Your admission cost -- which is seven bucks for everyone over 16 -- is going to Rocketown, the fantastic joint you're at for this event, and it's going to Los Colores, which will use it to give school supplies to KC Wright School. ArtHeart and Los Colores Presents: Art and Skate is from 5 to 11 p.m. at Rocketown (371 S. Federal Highway, Pompano Beach). Visit artheartreachinreachout.org.
