The Treasure of the Beaujolais
The release of the years nouveau Beaujolais every third Thursday of November is cause for celebration in France, and for 2009, it is in Pompano Beach too. From 6 to 8 tonight, Bispos Cellar (2112 E. Atlantic Blvd., Pompano Beach) will be pouring a trio of the light, fruity, easy-drinking wines from the Beaujolais region (Georges DuBoeuf, Henry Fessy and Joseph Drouhin), along with another dozen or so Beaujolais from Brouilly, Fleurie and Julienas.
Though serious cork dorks regard nouveau Beaujolais pretty much the way rabid foodies do the Big Mac, given a light chill, the wine makes a quite acceptable complement to many dishes, which Bispos will highlight by serving a variety of hors doeuvres, including paté de foie gras, chocolate truffles and with an eye to your Thanksgiving dinner honey-baked turkey. And, really, a wine that typically costs less than $10 a bottle and can wash down the holiday bird is something to be thankful for.
