Its not easy to glamorize Amtrak. Riding those dirty, seamy trains and buses can feel a bit like being squeezed down an intestinal tract. But one artist, Arnold Levin, has managed to make travel on our neglected public transport system look adventurous, even classy. Arrivals and Departures is an exhibit at Palm Beach State College that features 22 large, black-and-white photos of Levines trip from New York to West Palm Beach on an Amtrak train. The gallery itself has been transformed by the colleges theater department into an Amtrak station, complete with a ticket booth and unspeakably filthy restroom er, that last part was made up because, lets face it: An accurate re-creation would need to be peopled with at least a few menacing junkies and half-awake drivers.
The opening reception of Arnold Levine: Arrivals and Departures is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Palm Beach State College in the Jan & Gary Dario Gallery in the Humanities Building (4200 Congress Ave., Lake Worth). The exhibit runs through February 24. Free event. Call 561-868-3909, or visit palmbeachstate.edu.
Mondays-Fridays. Starts: Jan. 20. Continues through Feb. 24, 2011
