Trot Like a Turkey
The Fort Lauderdale Turkey Trot & Turkey Paddle on Thanksgiving Day benefits the fight against childhood obesity. A very worthy cause. Now, let's back away from this thought a little bit. Runners are some of the luckiest mofos out there. Because on the days that they run, they feel no guilt. Paddleboarders? Their sweated brows remain relaxed once they hit the ground. In fact, that sweated brow does not feel like sweat at all -- it feels like the mist of the ocean grazing the face. People who work out hard -- here's a lovely secret -- don't worry about calories too much. Sure, those who never leave the couch might not either -- but here's when another beautiful thing enters the picture for sweatoholics: Couch surfers don't get endorphins. The runner's high is true. Hell, paddleboarders get to walk on water -- that's gotta be a religious experience.
On run day, it's $40 to register for everybody (adults, kids, seniors, both runners and standup paddleboarders). The three-mile run/walk (yes, you may walk) will be a USA Track & Field-sanctioned event, having you mosey -- either hastily or slowly -- down Fort Lauderdale Beach, embarking off at DC Alexander Park (501 Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). The paddleboarders' two-mile course will be, of course, on the ocean -- starting where the runners start, but after a mile, they'll turn around. Race time is at 7:30 am. You're asked to arrive about a half hour to an hour before exercise time. Then, the rest of the day: Eat, eat, eat guilt-free, all thanks to iTRACE Foundation Inc. and Emerge Broward.
