Usin the Abby-Normal Brain
Mary Shelleys Frankenstein was a revolutionary novel that questioned the human condition and made insightful social commentary on the industrial and scientific revolutions of the early 1800s. Mel Brooks Young Frankenstein does none of those things but it does have musical numbers. And who doesnt want to see a reanimated seven-foot corpse with an abby-normal brain perform Puttin On the Ritz in a top hat and coattails? Mel Brooks fans will be thrilled by the addition of two more numbers Transylvania Mania and He Vas My Boyfriend and will have to force themselves not to quote out loud from the film. Shelley fans
will do none of those things. Yes, the Brooks classic has been made into a Broadway musical, and its pronounced Fronkensteen. It begins Thursday and runs to Sunday, October 17, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Au-Rene Theater, 201 SW Fifth Ave., in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $25 to $69. Preshow dinners are available October 9 and 16. Call 954-462-0222, or visit browardcenter.org/youngfrankenstein.
Thu., Oct. 7, 2 & 7 p.m.; Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 7. Continues through Oct. 17, 2010
