Using Your Head (of Garlic)

Garlic is the superhero of the herb family: If it could dress itself, it would wear a cape. See, those little cloves are medicinal cure-alls for everything from Athlete’s Foot to high blood pressure; they’re even considered helpful against in combating cancer. Of course, you don’t need a lesson on herbal remedies to appreciate the stuff; Whether it’s baked, sautéed, or chopped up in your guacamole, you’re going to eat it up anyway. Why fight it? Celebrate your love of garlic all weekend at the Ninth Annual Garlic Festival. Those spicy cloves work their way into all things edible during this community event. Even the ice cream is flavored with the good stuff.

Of course, in typical garlic fashion, it isn’t content with simply doing good inside your body, it wants to help others as well. Sixteen organizations profit from the three-day affair, even the Boy Scouts get into the action – so you don’t have to feel guilty if you get seconds (or thirds) on the ice cream. Garlic would want it that way.

In addition to great food, expect more than a hundred vendors selling everything from fine art to fun, trinkety collectables, and an education courtesy of Garlic University in what makes this herb so very cool. Chillax with a glass of merlot in the Cloves & Vine Wine bar, or shake what you got in the live music area. Saturday is the most active one of the festival; it’s the first round of the Chef Competition, in which local culinary masterminds from Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach show off what they can do with a bunch of cloves. There’s also a long list of rockin’ bands scheduled to perform before headlining act Blues Traveler takes the stage at 8 p.m. It all goes down at and around the Delray Beach Historic Old School Square (51 N.
