We All Love the ΄80s

This Saturday, America’s Backyard (200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) is throwing one hell of a Totally ΄80’s Party, which means it’s time for you to bust out the spandex, crop your hair into a mullet, and play dress-up. But how do you make sure your super original Punky Brewster costume isn’t a dupe, dude? Well, refer to our handy list of lesser-known-but-equally-cool suggestions to ensure you’re not just another clone:

The rocker: You need a unique take, so ditch the tight jeans and sleeveless metal shirt in favor of a cravat and a sequined jump suit. Bonus points for a jheri curl.

The hep cat: Everyone forgets ska was big in the ΄80s. A black tuxedo vest, Special’s T-shirt, fedora, and checkered shoes will have you skankin’ to the beat.

The jock: The secret to pulling this one off is ultra-short shorts, very hairy legs, and athletic socks up to your knees. Jorts (jean shorts) will do, as will gym shorts, but showing some thigh is a must, fellas.

The after school special: This one’s easy — get a pink dress, a cardigan, and a bottle of caffeine pills, and walk around saying you “just need a little more time to study,” before collapsing on the dance floor.

Admission costs $20 and includes two drinks and a complimentary buffet. Proceeds benefit the Young Professions for the Covenant House and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, among other noble charities. Visit to preorder for just $15, or call 954-568-7916.
