Whats Your Type?
You only notice typography when the arrangements are off. If youre reading a sobering sentiment, it should be visually delivered with some authority and clarity, right? Not some balloony, bubbly style typeface that will detract from the message. Such whimsy just doesnt feel right. Courier New, Helvetica, and Caslon all evoke different feelings from the reader and may or may not be totally inappropriate. Sometimes a message should be inviting, other times authoritative, at other times romantic, and on and on.
Friday and Saturday, the Collide Factory (541 NW First Ave., Fort Lauderdale) will present Typeface, a group art show displaying the works of various graphic designers who will take the process a step further, experimenting with typographic design for the purposes of artistic expression. Both nights open at 7, and admission costs $5. But Saturday will also include lectures from David Waters and designers from Iron Forge from noon to 3 p.m. Art documentary Helvetica, about the history of the typeface and typography in general, will also be shown. Saturday afternoons event costs $10. The exhibit runs through March 4 and is open to the public. Call 954-235-8396, or visit forartssakeshow.com.
