We have the Chinese to thank for paper and fireworks, but the Orient should be roundly condemned for its 2000-year-old invention, the Dragon Boat: An overlong canoe powered by two-dozen paddlers egged on by a drummer. Why a person would participate in this loud, masochistically strenuous watersport is beyond imagining (but then again, we prefer the exercise offered by lifting beer mug to mouth). If you happen to be that person, youre in luck. Blazing Paddles, a paddling and racing club in Davie, is teaching citizens to dragon boat from 9:30 a.m. till noon today. Though fucking exhausting, dragon boating offers a means of intense exercise and friendship forging. The first two practices are free. Meet up is at the intersection of Orange Dr. and Pine Island Rd. in Davie. To reserve one of 22 spots on the dragon boat, call 954-922-3388, or visit www.paddleorbepaddled.com.
