WLRN Gets Trivial
Quick question -- what year did it snow in Miami? (Hint: It was also the year punk broke.) No guesses? OK, then here's a Florida history no-brainer: In what 1980s film set in Miami did a character proclaim, "You gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. When you get the power, then you get the women."
And all hands go up. Excellent.
If you are looking to sharpen your knowledge of South Florida history and pop culture, the above scenario is one you can take part in at the ongoing WLRN South Florida Trivia Night. The event is part of the radio station's What's the Story project, in which curiosity about this wacky but wonderful state guides the reporters' stories. There are trivia teams of five or fewer, and every team gets a WLRN or Miami Herald team member for good measure.
"We'll be asking questions about South Florida history and pop culture," says WLRN-Miami Herald's Elaine Chen. "The best way to prepare is to read up on interesting things about Broward and South Florida generally. We're mostly trying to avoid trivial 'trivia' but instead to ask about events or facts that say a lot about South Florida."
Last August's event at Lester's in Miami featured questions on everything from the TV show Que Pasa USA? to what was the original slogan on the Florida flag when it joined the union in 1845 (answer: "Let Us Alone"), but questions can hit on everything from sports to biology. Space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis for Tuesday's 6:30 p.m. event at the Riverside Market Café, 608 SW 12th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-358-8333.
