Bust out the glow sticks and the rave wear, because the Winter Music Conference, Floridas annual electronic answer to SXSW is kicking off this week all throughout Miami. While the crux of WMC is the industry-only conference where electro bigwigs gather to do biz, the real fun comes from the thousands of musicians, DJs, producers, nightlife gurus, and clubheads that flock to the event to drop epic parties all across the MIA. WMC runs Tuesday, March 25 to Sunday, March 30, but were going to give yall a little rundown of where to be today to get your DJ fix, starting with the sixth annual Club World Awards ceremony held at 6 p.m. at Set Miami (320 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach). Think of it as the exclusive VIP-brother-from-another-mother to the populist Freestyle Awards going down across the city at the Miami Beach Convention Center (check out our coverage in Music). The Clubbies is the definitive event for the best of all things enshrined by velvet ropes, and if you dont believe us just peep these categories: Club Banger of the Year, Club Anthem of the Year, Best DJ Set, and wait for it Best Bottle Service. Those with the industry cred to get in (anyone with a fake business card) can sign up at www.clubworldawards.com.
If you believe the advice of Club World, then you may want to catch one of their nominees for Best DJ Set, Roger Sanchez, tonight at Mansion (1235 Washington Ave., Miami Beach). The venerable S-Man will be in town for another installment in his Release Yourself series, a new-agey, dance motif that blankets almost all of Sanchez shows, mix tapes, radio programs, self-help books, action figures, and microwave dinners (we made those last few up). Tix are $40, but while youre at it you could plop down $350 for a Mansion All-Access WMC Pass, which will get you in to every show at the club this week including Sasha & Digweed, MSTRKRFT, DJ AM, and Tiesto. Visit www.wantickets.com.
Clubbers who like their electro a bit more on the debauched side would do well to attend DJ Cats Pussy Party tonight at the oh-so-appropriately named Snatch (1437 Washington Ave., Miami Beach). Cat is a jet setting NYC DJ who spins a mixture of classic rock, house, ´80s, breaks, and techno but also records some really strange music of her own most of which has her singing about sexual encounters in a totally hip but disinterested sort of way. Imagine if Peaches was a Robert Palmer video vixen, and youd have Cat. She and her crew will throw down at 11 p.m. for just $15 a head. Call 305-604-3644.
