Xmas for the Art Lover

For the next seven days, Miami transforms itself into the vortex of the international art world with an around-the-clock, sensory-numbing menu of stellar events scattered across town, AKA Art Basel Miami Week. Only the foolhardy would risk scheduling invasive surgery or a drug or alcohol intervention this week — it’s a fine time to get wired on chemical substances, forsake sleep for days, and sweep away the cobwebs of a banal existence from your brain.

This Tuesday at 7 p.m., Wynwood’s Charest-Weinberg Gallery (250 NW 23rd Street, Space 408) is popping the cork on “Herd Thinner,” a bleeding-edge exhibit curated by the Big Apple’s David Hunt and featuring the work of more than a dozen artists who will be on hand for the launch of Art Basel week. It offers a dark vision of what Hunt is calling “an artist-dominated middle future,” or what sounds to us like a catastrophe of the Mayan-calendar-caliber for those unlucky enough to miss his cerebral soiree. Entrance is free. Call 305-292-0411 or visit charest-weinberg.com.

On Wednesday at 8 p.m., self-described musical auteur Danger Mouse, iconoclastic filmmaker David Lynch and maverick rock recluse Sparklehorse combine their otherworldly musings in “Dark Night of the Soul” at O.H.W.O.W. (3100 NW 7 Avenue, Miami). The exhibition consists of more than 50 original photographs by Lynch, displayed amid the accompanying soundtrack by his sonic sidekicks. Call 305-633-9345 or visit oh-wow.com.

Then on Thursday at noon, the Bass Museum of Art (2121 Park Avenue, Miami Beach) marks the stateside debut of Latin America’s largest private collection of contemporary art. “Where Do We Go From Here? Selections from La Coleccion Jumex” deploys a parade of international names ranging from Mike Kelley, Urs Fisher, and Louise Lawler alongside Mexican conceptualists Damian Ortega, Inaki Bonillas and Stephan Bruggeman. Call 305-673-7530 or visit bassmuseum.org.
Tue., Dec. 1, 7 p.m.; Wed., Dec. 2, 8 p.m.; Thu., Dec. 3, noon, 2009
