Ye Olde Goode Tyme

What comes to mind when you think of a festival? Most people imagine sweaty, multiday concerts and music lineups. But to those in the know, this time of year means a very different kind of fest -- the Florida Renaissance Festival. The beauty of this event is that you don't just attend it; you become a part of the experience. Don your finest butter-churning outfit and go back to a simpler time, when turkey legs were the size of your face and knights battled with a good old-fashioned joust. Hundreds of performers, including sword fighters, magicians, and minstrels, will stroll the fairgrounds with one purpose: to make your day. This fest is the perfect response to your friend who incessantly says there's nothing to do. There's so much going on at the Renaissance Fair that organizers had to make it five weeks to accommodate all the action. Try your hand at the life-size chess set or catch a live show, but whatever you do, don't show up wearing your everyday jeans and T-shirt. Be a sport and play along. That means you might want to leave your smartphone at home. Finally a reason to ignore those texts from your parents. The Florida Renaissance Festival takes place this Saturday through March 16 at Quiet Waters Park, located at 401 S. Powerline Road in Deerfield Beach. Adult tickets cost $20 for one day and $65 for a season pass. Visit, or call 800-3-REN-FES.
Saturdays, Sundays, 10 a.m. Starts: Feb. 8. Continues through March 16, 2014
