The words “Goooooood morning, Tigers,” echo through the halls of Warsaw Community High School, welcoming its students to a new year. And like that, American Teen begins. Documenting ten months in small-town Indiana, the film American Teen delves (again) into the hell that is high school, only this time, director Nannette Burstein manages to milk some insight from the lives of her on-screen teens. The cast is right out of the Breakfast Club, featuring stock-types like the jock, the princess, the geek boy, and the quirky-but-cute art chick. The plotline also takes a cue from another ΄80s flick, Pretty in Pink: When quirky girl discovers Mr. All-American Hottie harbors a crush on her, she marvels, “So many girls would give their left boob to go on a date with him!” Meanwhile, the princess applies peer pressure, the jock tries out for a scholarship, and geek boy attempts to land himself a lady-friend. Rediscover the humor and heartbreak that is high school Friday through Wednesday at Sunrise Cinemas Gateway (1820 E Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). Tickets cost $8.50.
