Growing up in a highly religious family blows: you have to spend your weekends at wacky revivals, you cant even unwrap a Fruit Roll-up without getting that sticky feeling of eternal damnation, and you never, ever get to watch Dirty Dancing at sleepovers. It seriously sucks. Will Proudfoot is bound to agree; hes the central character in the new indie smash-to-be Son of Rambow. Poor little Will is reared without the glue-stuff that binds a generation of kids: television, films, and music all in the name of his familys religion, the Brethren.
But when Will finds a friend in the school bully who coincidentally has an extensive bootleg movie collection, the two become fast mates. Soon simply watching a film no longer satisfies them, theyre going to have to make their own. With explosions. See two little kids take on parents, religion, and elementary school while achieving cinematic greatness today at the Gateway (1820 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale), and Mizner Park Cinemas (301 Plaza Real, Boca Raton). Visit www.sunrisecinemas.com for more information, including ticket prices and showtimes.
