THU 6/10

When one thinks of quilting, the inevitable image of a cute old grandma in a rocking chair usually comes to mind. Nothing too fancy or artful, just some old bag wiling away the hours on her front porch. Of course, that's just the stereotype. The art of quilt-making is hardly limited to sewing a random string of geometric patterns. Just take a look at Linda MacDonald's "Wildlife Sanctuaries" (shown above), featured as part of the "Quilt National 03" exhibit now showing at the Cornell Museum of Art and History at Old School Square (51 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach). MacDonald's piece -- a combination of quiltwork, hand-painting, and airbrushing -- more closely resembles a New Yorker illustration than something folded up on Granny's couch. And that' s the point of the exhibit -- it's innovative. Quilters are continually exploring new design and craft-making techniques, such as appliqué, in which separate shapes or images are applied to the quilt, creating a multidimensional, layered effect. The emphasis of the exhibit is not simply on technique but on self-expression. With the added advantage of the paint brush, quilters can create the same fine art historically relegated to oil on canvas. Quilt National 03 is open now through September 11. Admission costs $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students. Call 561-243-7922. --Jason Budjinski

A night for fighting

SAT 6/12

When someone says, "I'm gonna lay you like a doormat," it usually means they're incredibly horny and want to ride you like a rickshaw. But for professional wrestlers, such talk denotes an impending ass whoopin', and a "four-way" is anything but a love fest. Welcome to the "New South," the debut event presented by Pro Wrestling Fusion, featuring an NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship four-way match with Mike Sullivan defending his title against Billy Fives, Antonio Banks, and Scoot Andrews. Other matches include NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Jerrelle Clark versus Mikey Batts; a tag team between Fahrenheit 420 and the Vandals; and lots more. Piledrive on over to the Davie Police Athletic League facility (4300 SW 57th Ter., Davie) at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $10. Call 954-326-3077. --Jason Budjinski
