In the state where it’s still illegal to adopt a child if you’re gay and where the hateful, chicken-shit Amendment 2 that defines marriage as the legal union between one man and one woman passed just 14 months ago, it’s safe to say that the LGBT community around here occasionally feels pretty (justifiably) fucked-over. Thankfully, the folks in Tallahassee still haven’t made same-sex poker a crime in Florida, which makes Monday nights at the newly opened Stonewall Tavern (200 N. Broadwalk, Hollywood) a great place for the LGBTCP (that’d be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, card-playing) community. From 9 p.m. to midnight, a $5 tip for the dealer gets you into a game that can win you a $125 bar tab.

“Most of the places around here are guy bars or girl bars,” says owner Allen Carley. “We wanted to make an environment where gays, lesbians, trans… anyone would feel welcome.” The fact that the environment is just steps from the beach is a huge bonus. But just remember: If you bump into Charlie Crist playing a little stud, pretend you don’t recognize him — or hot guy-on-guy card games may be next on the legislative hit list. Call 945-922-7933, or visit stonewalltavern.net.
Mondays, 9 p.m. Starts: Feb. 8. Continues through July 26, 2010
