The Florida Marlins became buyers before the trade deadline when they traded for Washington Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson. And that’s a good thing, because when the Fish trade for a player, it’s usually some useless aging relief pitcher with Styrofoam for ligaments in his throwing shoulder. But this time around, the Marlins went after a much-needed bat in hopes that Johnson’s plate discipline can offset the rest of the team’s fondness for swinging wildly. Johnson has a career .399 OBP and .499 slugging percentage, plays some nifty defense, and looks like Private Pile from Full Metal Jacket. He also once shaved lightning bolts into his head. What’s not to like?

Sure, like most good players we trade for, he’ll be gone in the off-season, but for now, it’s Johnson Time! Florida takes on the Colorado Rockies Sunday at Land Shark Stadium (2269 Dan Marino Blvd., Miami). Tickets start at $12. First pitch is at 5:05 p.m. Call 877-MARLINS, or visit florida.marlins.mlb.com.
