Grease’s Betty Rizzo was like this generation’s Samantha Jones. She challenged mainstream values, refused to be ashamed of her sexuality, and dismissed others’ contempt as the unenlightened nattering of a repressed society. But you probably didn’t watch Grease over and over for its trenchant social critiques. Maybe it was the guilty pleasure-ridden soundtrack with infectious tunes like “Greased Lightning” and the cheesy ballad “Hopelessly Devoted to You”? No? How about that John Travolta is the best damn dancer that’s ever graced this planet and the world needed more of his feather-footed goodness after Saturday Night Fever? While you’re no John Travolta, Lake Worth Playhouse will give you a chance to be part of Rydell High’s class of ’59 when it holds open auditions for their summer production of Grease.

Auditions will start at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Lake Worth Playhouse (713 Lake Ave., Lake Worth). A dance will be provided, but performers should bring a show tune or rock ‘n’ roll song that best represents the 1950s. For more information call 561-586-6169, or visit lakeworthplayhouse.org.
Mon., May 11, 7 p.m.; Tue., May 12, 7 p.m., 2009
