In Hawaiian mythology, it is believed that volcanic eruptions are caused not by tectonic plate activity but by Hawaiian goddess of fire Pele, who stomps her feet and digs Pa’oe, her magic stick, under the earth until a fiery eruption occurs.

To keep Pele at bay, legend suggests offerings must be made in her honor. Instead of your first born, start small with a cocktail toast during Friday night’s happy hour at LAVA Tiki Bar and Grille at Crowne Plaza Hollywood Beach Resort (4000 S. Ocean Dr., Hollywood). Locals pour in from 6 to 9 p.m. and perch either poolside or in cabanas to sip specialty drinks while gorging on wings, tropical chicken quesadillas, and burgers. Live music, like tonight’s performance by The 18 Wheelers, happens each Friday. Call 954-454-4334, or visit www.cphollywoodbeachresort.com. No cover.
