If there is one thing that the Starbucks colonization of America has taken from us, it’s our old hangouts. You didn’t used to necessarily go to your local coffee shop just to sip a cup o’ Joe. Instead, you went to catch up with friends, study for finals, play board games, and maybe sign-on to Prodigy with their fancy dial-up Internet connection. Now, you pray the cashier gets the order right so you can leave as quickly as possible, carefully dodging multiple laptops and their yuppie slaves on the way out.

Aileen Liptak must have realized what was missing when she opened Undergrounds Coffeehaus (2743 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) a year ago. The little java spot has attracted a hip crowd thanks to its friendly service, book-stuffed shelves, and of course, great coffee. The Coffeehaus will be hosting an ΄80s Old Skool Night this Saturday, and is encouraging visitors to bring their Z. Cavaricci’s and Madonna Rags to dress the part. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and listen to the beats of DJ Jazzy Jaz, while you remember why hanging out in a cool coffeehouse is always better than Starbucks. Music starts at 9 p.m. Call 954-630-1900.
