Valentine's, schmalentine’s. It’ s just another expenditure foisted upon us poor consumers, right? Chances are, you'll probably end up doing the mandatory flowers-and-dinner thing, languishing on a date with whomever you could find, or writhing around your room like a lonely heart on prom night. Let’s face it – what you really want to do is dance. Fortunately, the cool cats at Low Fidelity have planned a ´50s-style Sock Hop Party. DJs Scotty Upton, Mike Hooker, Owen von Heatseeker, and Timmy Tatts shake the halls and rattle the walls with those inimitable classics of the rockabilly/soul/doo-wop era. But it’s more than just music; there’s also a twist contest and prizes for best outfits; that means poodle skirts, pompadours, and leather jackets are strongly encouraged. So while you party like it's 1959, you can chuckle to yourself at all the frazzle-faced squares of the world. Let them scurry about in vainly for roses and table reservations… it won’t be you who gets caught trying to pass off Russell Stover as Godiva. The Low Fidelity Sock Hop Dance Party takes place at 10 p.m. Friday at Maguire’s Hill 16 (535 N. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Admission costs $5.
