The world's longest, most exhaustive, and intermittently exhausting film festival is back, and it's awesome. The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival -- FLIFF, as it's called -- begins on Saturday, with The Artist (a drama set in the silent-film era, starring John Goodman, James Cromwell, and Malcolm McDowell, among others) and ends on November 11 with a crazy bash in Wilton Manors. And in between! So many movies! So many celebs! You've got flicks from 40 countries! You've got Larry Mullen Jr., the undisputed third most interesting member of U2, doing a Q&A via Skype after a screening of his starring vehicle The Man on the Train! There's Piper Laurie, who, despite being one of the two or three best American actresses of her generation, has managed to win exactly none of the 13,000 Academy Awards for which she's been nominated! (She's getting a Lifetime Achievement Award and doing a Q&A.) And there's more! Three weeks' worth of more! Too much more to explore in this little space! Screenings are at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale), the Sunrise Civic Center (10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Sunrise), and Pompano Muvico 18 (2315 N. Federal Highway, Pompano Beach).
