Boca Raton might seem like the land of the retirees and stuffy society matrons, but there is actually something of a scene there. It’s true, a lot of that scene is mixed right in with the retirees and snowbirds along a stretch of Federal Highway, just south of the well-known Mizner Park. The Wishing Well and Holloway’s have long offered nice grungy bars for the 21-to-35 set to call home. The Black Rose Irish Pub (234 S. Federal Highway, Boca Raton) is the latest edition on the outskirts of Royal Palm Plaza, and it is already trying to build a reputation as the place to go for, well, everything from darts and billiards to in-the-biz specials. Judge for yourself Friday by attending the Edition1 Art and Music Showcase. There will be live art, three bands (Stonecutters, Makeshift Wings, Buffalo Tux), musical guests (Aaron Storck and Richard King), two DJs (Mark Kincaid and Alex Markow), and a Svedka photo booth doling out free shots — all of which sounds more like something you’d find in Fort Lauderdale than Boca. How they’ll have time to even fit in all those musical acts between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. we don’t know, but we’re excited to find out. There will also be art on display and for sale from more than 20 local artists. Cover is free, but it’s strictly 21 and over.
