Whether you're heading for Hollywood, bound for Broadway, or angling for a local commercial, the Actor's Workshop of South Florida will equip you with the acting chops you'll need to land the part. Now in its 11th year, the Actor's Workshop operates in a nondescript, virtually hidden warehouse in Deerfield Beach where it hosts year-round classes for aspiring thespians from their teens to their twilight years. The class is led by Jane Kelly, a London-born actress who has been acting professionally since age 9. Graduates of her workshop have enjoyed speaking parts on shows and in movies such as Burn Notice and Marley & Me, and the class is also cited as a way to improve public speaking and overcome shyness. "The foundation of acting is how to relax, how to use your voice, how to access your emotion, all these things that on a daily basis either shut down or that we aren't connected with," Kelly says. "Some say the class is like a family, and others say it's life-changing." The next session begins Monday with an eight-week introductory program; once you complete it, Kelly offers an "ongoing" workshop to further refine your skills. The class runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays, and the cost is $160 for the program. Call 954-421-7469, or visit theactorsworkshop.org.
