Once upon a time, Brooklyn artists Molly Crabapple and A.V. Phibes dreamed of an alternative solution to the often-drab life drawing classes they'd been exposed to. Sure, there was nudity, but the rooms were usually stale, cold, and lit with fluorescent bulbs. Thus, the two artistic magicians birthed Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School -- a cure for the common, lifeless, drawing-class environment. Making its way across the nation, the monthly event finally landed itself a home in South Florida with organizer Charlotte Sundquist. Once a month, the local creative folks convene for an artsy hangout session to booze, socialize, and sketch a busty burlesque babe posing onstage. But she doesn't just stand and look pretty. She's usually got an assortment of props -- not those kinds! -- like hula hoops, balloons, and maybe a little fire to keep the night interesting. Although this monthly event is usually held at Stage 84, tonight's session will be at the Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts. The event begins at 6 p.m., and admission is $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Voted by New Times as the Best Art Event in 2012, this is a night to set the DVR to record and channel your creative side instead. Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts is located at 1310 SW Second Court in Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-695-1587, or visit drsketchy.com/branch/southflorida.
