Ask any lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender male or female and he or she will tell you that coming out of the closet was no easy task. While it was at first worrisome to hear the reactions from loved ones, a weight seemed to be lifted once the truth was finally revealed. The disappointing reality is that this aging population may have to lock up their secret once again. Discover what happens to six LGBT seniors as they hide their lives to survive in the Gen Silent film screening in Broward.
This award-winning documentary, cosponsored by SunServe, a social service organization in Wilton Manors; and the Peninsula, an assisted living and memory care community, shares the story of LGBT seniors so afraid of discrimination by health and long-term care that they contemplate going back in the closet. This hourlong film, directed by Stu Maddux, follows the men and women over the course of a year in Boston, capturing their personal experiences, feelings, and concerns.
The film is free and open to the public on Thursday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Peninsula, located at 5100 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd. in Hollywood. A roundtable discussion with facilitators will follow the film. Call 954-893-7755, or visit thepeninsulaassistedliving.com.
