Crank it out for Charity

A band of self-proclaimed "bicycle weirdoes" is on the loose in Fort Lauderdale. You may have spotted them riding around downtown on weeknights sporting decked-out rides and spunky helmets with spikes. RiSKi Action Coalition -- as they call themselves when being serious -- care about more than mere amusement; they appreciate giving back to the community. So much so, RiSKi AC will host a scavenger hunt, "Community Care Race and Ride," on Saturday. This friendly race will take cyclists on a hunt with six stops in which participants are to knock out a shopping list by purchasing sanitary supplies like toothpaste, shampoo, and body wash priced at two or three bucks. The purchased items will be donated to the Poverello Center, a charitable nonprofit that supplies basic life essentials to individuals living with HIV/AIDS. To purchase the supplies, participants are encouraged to bring $20 in cash. The course is ten to 15 miles depending on how the cyclists choose their paths. Oh, and gentlemen, tampons are on the shopping list, so don't tell us we didn't warn you. While the event is a race and whoever finishes first will score prizes, the organizers encourage participants to check the competitive attitude at the door... er, pavement, and keep in mind that this is all in good fun for a good cause. Registration begins at 3 p.m., and the race rolls out at 4 p.m. at the Pride Center at Equality Park, 2040 N. Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors. Visit facebook.com/riski.ac.
