Battered but Not Broken kicks off its 50-city tour in Miramar to help raise awareness of domestic violence across the country. Playwright Cynthia Wilson tells a story of triumph, self-respect, and bravery when it comes to abuse. The play draws from some of Wilson's own tragic experiences of being in an abusive relationship and even having her niece murdered by her boyfriend. The story follows Justina Blessing, whose mother and drug-dealing boyfriend abuse her as a child. At age 11, Justina moves in with her father, who gives her a loving and supportive home, unlike the one she experienced before. Unfortunately, she ends up suffering from both of her parents' actions when she falls in love with a man who appears to be her knight in shining armor but is more like a wolf in sheep's clothing. Showtimes are 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday at the Miramar Cultural Center, located at 2400 Civic Center Place in Miramar. Tickets cost $22.50 to $29.50. Call 954-602-4500, or visit miramarculturalcenter.org.
Sat., March 1, 3 & 8 p.m., 2014
