Imagine a family man fleeing his home country to live the American dream only to be accused of terrorism and locked away. The documentary Barzan follows Sam "Barzan" Malkandi, an Iraqi refugee who gets linked to al Qaeda after the 9/11 attacks and is held captive in jail. Malkandi then faces conflicting roles of balancing his neighborly persona living in a Seattle suburb while struggling with the government suspecting him as a national terrorist. The documentary pinpoints modern social issues like immigration, terrorism, and today's national security. Director Alex Stonehill and writer/producer Sarah Stuteville shot the film both in Iraq and Seattle and incorporated animated sequences and photos of these unique locations. Stonehill and Stuteville will also hold a Q&A after the movie. The documentary is part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, which has presented more than 200 independent films throughout the southeastern U.S. Barzan plays at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Miramar Civic Center, located at 2400 Civic Center Place in Miramar.
