New Times Broward-Palm Beach Calendar Editor Mickie Centrone attends and details some of the finest -- and occasionally subpar -- events from a given week. On Friday, she went to the "Red Eye" event at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale.

One guy in a red flannel is ranting at ArtServe's art/music/fashion party called "Red Eye." "South Florida needs a union for artists and hospitality services," says Alex. "Artists are not treated properly in South Florida. Just because you don't have a million dollars in your pocket doesn't mean you should be treated like a piece of shit... like your mind does not work. We should be respected. We might work differently, but we're not stupid." Amen, Alex. Wish I knew what caused this outcry of passion, but you wouldn't let me intervene... once.

But I'll tell you this now, Alex, because this is the only time you'll let me: I love it when a mixed-age crowd of artists who at first glance appear to be conservative turn out to be quite the opposite.
