Just announced: Joel Meinholz, head of the supercool party promotions/whatever company IAmYourVillain, has just booked the legendary Beat Junkie J-Rocc to perform this Sunday at the Chocolate Sundays at Purdy Lounge. (IAmYourVillain is also responsible for the chilled-out, hip-hoppy, skateboarderish, anything-goes vibe of fun parties like Take Out Tuesday at Buck 15, and Yo! BBQ Wednesdays at PS14).
Born Jason Jackson in Southern California, J Rocc was one of the founding members of the legendary Beat Junkies turntablism crew, along with Melo-D and Rhettmatic. They would later add Babu (who in turn would join Dilated Peoples), and then future battle DJ stars Shortkut and D-Styles. After the Beat Junkies retired from the battle circuit, J Rocc and Babu went on to form the Bumrush Bros., and open the Fat Beats record store outpost in L.A.
Blah, blah, blah, basically this guy is a LEGEND on the decks, and promises to have people shakin' their shit all over Purdy Lounge's comfortably worn-out furniture. Did I mention there's never a cover for Chocolate Sundays? So if you don't know, now you know. -- Arielle Castillo
Here's a video of J-Rocc spinning at a James Brown tribute party at the Marlin Hotel here in Miami, during this year's WMC.
