In our Moving Units column, Mike Ramirez at Fort Lauderdale's Radio-Active Records graciously keeps us up-to-date and comments on the current releases flying out of his store each week.
As each Moving Units column is lovingly compiled, we'd like to think that we're administering critical care to the terminal patient that is the record industry. Look no further than electro-noise experimenter Rene Hell, who pulled some big sales at Radio-Active this week, as an example of an album that won't ever get Band of Horses-level backing, but could end up as the conversation-starter at the next party you attend.
Below, get the top-sellers and some info on the Sleigh Bells' physical release of Treats.
Radio-Active's Top 5 Releases for May 25-31:
1. Band Of Horses - Infinite Arms (Brown Records/Fat Possum/Columbia)
2. LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening (DFA)
3. Rene Hell - Porcelain Opera (Type) "Newcomer Rene Hell took the number 3 spot with his mixture of analogue soundscapes and brooding menace -- always welcomed with open arms from the Radio-Active staff."
4. Real Estate - Reality (Mexican Summer)
5. The Black Keys - Brothers (Nonesuch)
Mike's thoughts on the week:
"Kurt Vile's new EP, Square Shells (Matador) fell off the cliff a little bit so here's a reminder to get his new LIMITED EDITION 12 INCH while you can! Other notable entries into the lower end of the Radio-Active chart include Cocorosie's Grey Oceans (Sub Pop), Nirvana's Unplugged in New York (DGC), and the Locust's Peel Sessions (Radio Surgery)."
Which albums will we be talking about next week?
"Big hype for Sleigh Bells' Treats (Mom + Pop/N.E.E.T.) CD which hits the store today. I'm glad to see this has received a proper release and there will be a limited edition LP Picture Disc later on this month. Hopefully not everyone bought this record on iTunes! Veteran noise-rockers the Melvins have a new CD, Bride Screamed Murder (Ipecac), out, the Cure's Disintegration 3-CD package is pushed back for another week, and the Futureheads release a new album, The Chaos (Dovecote), to anyone willing to listen. See you next week!
