Now that we've outlasted the Mayan calendar, we can dare to peek ahead and see what music there is to look forward to in 2013.
Obviously this is a subjective list coming from one South Floridian's perspective, so you will have to go elsewhere to read about Justin Bieber finally playing a concert in Turkey.
Without further ado, in chronological order...
January 10
The Darkness at Revolution
This British glam-rock band reportedly put on a legendary theatrical show. Though it never caught on in the States as it did in the U.K., seeing if singer Justin Hawkins can hit the falsetto notes of its biggest hit, "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," should be worth the price of admission alone.
January 15
The new Yo La Tengo album Fade
The veteran indie rock trio Yo La Tengo aged gracefully the way few bands do. Even under heavy distortion, there's always a melody to be found in the songs. The first track, "Ohm," off the lucky 13th album from the Hoboken group could have been a hidden track from any of their previous works.
January 26 and 27
G Love & Special Sauce at Culture Room
This Philly group first captured my imagination with 1994's Blues Music. Nearly two decades have passed, their musicianship might have improved, and their enthusiasm for old-timey music has remained as youthful as ever.
February 5
The xx at the Fillmore Miami Beach
No band screams now like the xx. Making their first South Florida appearance to promote their newest album, Coexist. Tickets already sold out, but if rumors of the British band's prowess are to be believed, it might be worth breaking into your piggy bank to pay off a scalper for tickets.
February 26
The new Atoms for Peace album AMOK
Supergroups are usually less than the sum of their parts. Too many egos, too many solos, and not enough cohesion have been the fall of bands that look great on paper but lack something in practice. Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea try to do their solid reputations proud with this first Atoms for Peace album.
February 26
Johnny Marr's first solo album, The Messenger
The 1980s' most influential guitarist, Johnny Marr, will put out his first solo album in 2013. After founding the Smiths and playing on Modest Mouse's last release, Johnny Marr tries to do it alone. The first single, also titled "The Messenger," is vintage Britpop.
April 20 (I'll believe it when I see it)
Dr. Dre's new album Detox
Now that Brian Wilson finally released a version of Smile and Axl Rose brought out Chinese Democracy, Dr. Dre's Detox holds the title of longest-awaited album. Dre first announced what he said would be his final album in early 2000.
