Thousands of voices in the crowd sang every lyric along with Kendrick Lamar this past weekend at the Black Friday Festival. He told us backstage that even he was surprised that they knew all the words.
Straight off a plane from L.A., the rising hip-hop star showed no signs of fatigue before taking the stage at Boca Raton's Sunset Cove Amphitheater. With his burgundy Docs and matching underwear peeking out from above his loose pants, he bounced in front of the audience, revealing his talents, letting them come to him.
Hosted by My.Am.I. Music, the scene was nuts out there at the edge of the Everglades. Even Timbaland was walking around backstage amidst the dank smell of green to support his son DJ Demetrius. Kid Ink, Pusha T, and a whole lot of others got the audience excited enough to knock down a few barricades, but not enough to start any real trouble.
We caught up with Lamar after the show and chatted about being a "black hippy gangsta." He revealed that though he was laid-back at the moment, he can most certainly explode at any moment. And exploding and blowing up the airwaves is what he seems to be doing best these days.
