Police: Slain Riviera Beach Teacher Calvin Williams Was Taking HIV Meds

The unmarked pill bottles in his Riviera Beach apartment may have pushed Calvin Williams' killer over the edge. Now police have confirmed that Williams, 41, a popular middle school special-ed teacher whose lover allegedly shot him in the head, was taking several medications used to treat HIV.

Lawrence Hunt, 20, told police that he shot Williams on May 14 because the teacher tried to sexually assault him. The two men had been lovers for a couple of years, Hunt said, but he recently heard rumors that Williams had the virus that causes AIDS.

That morning, a drunken Williams was demanding Hunt give him a blowjob, but Hunt refused. He asked Williams if he had HIV and pointed out the pill bottles in the room, according to a probable-cause affidavit in the case.

Williams ignored the question and kept pursuing Hunt. The two men struggled, until

Williams allegedly pushed Hunt down on the bed. "Are you trying to rape me?" Hunt demanded, according to the affidavit. "I know you got that shit. What are you trying to do, give it to me?"

Williams climbed on top of Hunt and starting pulling off his shorts, announcing, "I'm a get that ass."

"Get the fuck back," Hunt protested. He pulled out a .38-caliber gun and shot Williams twice, first in the arm, then in the head.

When Riviera Beach police arrived at the crime scene, they found the unmarked pill bottles in a backpack in Williams' bedroom. They took the pills to a Walgreens pharmacist, who identified them as Truvada and Isentress, both used to treat the virus that causes AIDS. An autopsy report from the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office does not indicate whether Williams had the virus.

Williams was a teacher at L.C. Swain Middle School in Greenacres and had been working in the Palm Beach County school district for a decade when he died.

Hunt, who has no previous rap sheet in Palm Beach County, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and remains in the Palm Beach County Jail awaiting trial.
