The Monroe County Sheriff's Office got a hot tip yesterday on where the missing Captain Morgan statue was -- he was "wherever the party was taking place."
Someone stole a statue of fictional rum salesman Captain Morgan from outside a Key West Walgreens store last week, and sheriff's deputies found him yesterday partying in the dorms at Florida Keys Community College.
After the tipster phoned in the location of the captain, police say sheriff's deputies found him in a dorm room, "reportedly covered in Fantasy Fest beads."
"No one would admit to having taken him, but students told the deputies he'd been making the rounds from room to room, 'wherever the party was taking place,'" writes MCSO Deputy Becky Herrin. "Captain Morgan was returned to Walgreen's in Key West, none the worse for wear."
According to a police report, Captain Morgan was last seen at his post outside the Key West store at 10:20 p.m. on October 17.
The store manager said the statue was stolen sometime between then and 8 a.m. the next day, which means the captain was out partying for a good week.
The five-foot statue is worth $500, according to the police report. The manager of the store told police he's looked at several store security tapes but couldn't find evidence of the theft or images of who took it.
No one was booked on the grand theft charge for taking the captain.
