The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating Sheriff Al Lamberti's Super Bowl adventure with his then-15-year-old son, Nick.
Though I think there are far more important matters to investigate, this is a good thing.
Remember that the Lamberti Super Bowl story was broken here on January 3 with a document showing that Nick Lamberti had been given a BSO employee number and put on BSO's "Credentials Matrix" for the game. It looked bad. South Florida Times' Elgin Jones has investigated the Super Bowl matter, finding more irregularities.
Lamberti has since claimed that he and his son worked the entire time and didn't even watch the Super Bowl. I opined here that if this is true, it's a dead issue. It amounts to a sheriff letting his kid tag along on a big detail to see how he does his job.
Poor judgment? Yes.
A crime of corruption? I would submit that the personal benefit in this equation is negligible and that no jury would ever convict under those circumstances.
Had Nick watched the Super Bowl in a skybox and hung out with Peyton Manning, well, that would have been a whole different ball game.
But this is something that demands an investigation nonetheless. There are other questions here involving Super Bowl pay for some select BSO officials as well that may be far more significant. FDLE and Assistant State Attorney Dave Schulson need to get to the bottom of it.
Just don't let it get too much in the way of your other important work.
