Maybe it was the first time you saw the pink slime footage. Or perhaps it was the first time you saw a video about the grave realities of the veal industry.

Whatever the entry point was, something got you thinking about giving a damn about what you're putting in your mouth and the process of how it got to your plate. For many folks, a visit to a Farm Sanctuary (where rescued animals that were slotted for slaughterhouses live out their lives) is that very entrance.

With farm locations in California and New York, Animal activist, best-selling author and co-founder and president of Farm Sanctuary Gene Baur will bring his personal experiences from the farm to a special speaking event and buffet dinner at Darbster in Boca Raton on Tuesday night.

"Our food choices have profound consequences for ourselves, other animals and the planet, but we grow up in America without thinking enough about these," Baur explained to Clean Plate Charlie recently.

For the past 25 years, Baur has campaigned to raise awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming and the phenomenon of the "cheap food" system. His approach to activism and education is of the friendly kind, having started out with handing out veggie dogs out of a VW van at Grateful Dead concerts.

But Gene has also testified in courts and before local, state, and federal levels advocating for better conditions for farm animals. In the last few decades, Baur has visited hundreds of farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses where he documented the miserable conditions and cruelties of factory farms.

"Farm Sanctuary encourages consumers to think about what they're eating, and ultimately, to eat in alignment with their own values and interests. As this happens, we'll see massive change in our food system."

And speaking of the food, Tuesday night's buffet will be stocked with vegan sliders, Penne a la Vodka, Raw Sliders, "Chicken" Parmigiana, Palm Cakes, Raw Zucchini Alfredo, Falafel, Enchiladas, Tahini Salad, Brownies, Carrot Cake and Raw Chocolate Mousse.

Tickets for that will benefit the Farm Sanctuary cost $50 and include a free drink ticket. Dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. RSVP at www.darbster.eventbrite.com.
