The food scene is growing by leaps and bounds in South Florida. We have everything now from haute cuisine to trendy burger shacks.

But there's a staple of Florida dining that should never be forgotten because it is the very sort of spot that often convinces most people to move here in the first place - casual restaurants with a view of the water. That's one thing neither the locals nor the tourists ever tire of and now, we've got a new place to enjoy it - Oar House Restaurant and Bar in Pompano Beach.

The new dockside eatery will host its grand opening on Saturday, May 11. There will be live music from 3 to 9 p.m. as well as prizes, drink specials, some free food options all day.

"We want everyone to join us and just have a good time; enjoy the bands, paddle boarding and try some of our Oar House specialties on the menu.

My personal favorites are the Crab Cakes, fresh sushi and our Oar House Burger." commented Debby Richter, co-owner and Oar House partner with Richard Ruben.

With a tiki-bar outside and a Key West feel, the Oar House promises to be a welcoming Florida style hangout.

"Today more than ever, we think people need to feel they're not just a number. It's kind of like the 'Cheers' concept where 'everybody knows your name'," commented Richter. "We also hope to re-establish the strong music scene in South Florida. Right now we have the VROD band every Friday and plan to go nightly featuring a Jazz night, Blues night, Rock night among other genres."

They even offer paddle board rentals and - soon - space for dockside "parking" for the boaters.

Oar House Restaurant and Bar is located at 200 E. McNab Road in Pompano Beach. They are already open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. for lunch and dinner with live entertainment on the weekends. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. and if it rains they offer $3 well drinks and beer to the brave but soggy.
